The
General MacArthur Military Leadership Writing Awards for 2005 at the U.S. Army
Command and General Staff College were awarded during ceremonies at Fort
Leavenworth, KS, on May 20, 2005. The recipients for the 2004-2005 academic year
were Major Demetrius Nicholson, Major John Burpo and Major Marshall Ecklund.
The first place paper by Major Nicholson, Seeing the Other Side of the
Hill: The Art of Battle Command, Decision-Making, Uncertainty, and the
Information Superiority Complex deals with the capabilities of Network
Centric Warfare and how it will enhance military operations. Major Nicholson
will become the Operations Officer for the 4th Squadron, 6th
Cavalry (Air) following graduation. Major Burpo’s paper entitled, The
Great Captains of Chaos: Developing Adaptive Leaders examines what an
adaptive leader is and offers a formal definition and a series of programs to
aid in developing these leadership traits. His next assignment is Operations
Officer for the 5th Squadron, 2d Cavalry. The final
recipient, Major Ecklund examines the adoption of a joint officer evaluation
report in his paper, Leading Change: Could a Joint Officer Evaluation
Report be the Missing Catalyst of Army Transformation. Major Ecklund
will assume command of Company C, 2nd Battalion, 7th
Special Forces Group following graduation.

director, Center for Army Leadership, encourages and recognizes scholarship and
professional writing on military leadership.
