Directed by Frank Capra, and produced by the U.S. War Department, The Negro Soldier features U.S. newsreel footage as well as captured German and Japanese footage.

The film was intended to both celebrate the achievements of African Americans in the military and educate the public about the contributions of African Americans throughout American history.

Hailed at the time by Langston Hughes as one of the best portrayals of African Americans in film, the film was extremely popular during the war.
