Col. George Taylor, U.S. Army, (Ret.) of Virginia Beach,
Virginia, recently gave his uniforms from 20 years of service with the United
States Army to the MacArthur Memorial. The collection includes a Korean War-era
"Ike" jacket with 3rd Infantry Division and Armor School
patches, complete with ribbons, collar insignia and Captain’s insignia; a green
Korean War-vintage field jacket with Major’s insignia; a green Class A uniform
with 3rd Infantry Division patch and Colonel’s insignia; a
Korean War-vintage fur-lined field vest; and a complete Judge Advocate General
Corps dress blue uniform.
George Taylor began his military career in Korea, first as an
infantry platoon commander, then as a tank platoon commander, and retired some
twenty years later as a Colonel in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps. During the
Korean War, then-Lieutenant Taylor was attached to the 7th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, and saw action
at Chosin Reservoir in late 1950 and also aided in extricating the Belgian
Battalion, surrounded by the Chinese along the Imjin River, north of Seoul in
April 1951. He has written about his Korean War experiences in MHQ: The
Quarterly Journal of Military History and Army magazine.
Col. Taylor’s uniforms are a great addition to the Memorial’s
collection as many of the items he donated are the only ones of their type in
the museum’s holdings, such as the fur-lined vest and dress blue uniform. In
addition, Col. Taylor’s uniforms add the JAG Corps to the various branches
represented in the collection.
