Why Expand?  Preserving our history and honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces are essential for our nation. These are the primary objectives of the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation, as is our dedicaction to preserving General MacArthur's enduring values of DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY. The ranks are thinning of those veterans who served with the General, which makes it critical that we enhance and improve our ability to educate future generations on the values and legacy of General MacArthur.

The proposed expansion will triple the changing exhibit space, add a sophisticated multi-media theater, provide a great hall for visitor orientation, and upgrade the Memorial's gift shop. Expansive use of glass will allow visitors to look in from and out to MacArthur Square. A sweeping curved wall along one street facade-the Story Wall-will present inscribed copper plates that highlight General MacArthur's life and legacy.

This modernization and expansion project of the MacArthur Memorial is the first phase of a broader master plan to improve our services and enhance the visitor experience and education for future generations.

Why Now?  It is vital that we capture the imagination of a new generation and expose them to the ideals and achievements of General Douglas MacArthur. Additionally, the City of Norfolk is enjoying a downtown renaissance, including the introduction of light rail transit and the construction of a new cruise ship terminal. This expansion initiative capitalizes on the renaissance by attracting a broad new customer base for the MacArthur Memorial

The City of Norfolk has pledged matching funds for the project. Your help is needed to gain these matching funds, bring this initiative to life, and preserve the General's legacy.

• Great Hall

  A soaring multi-purpose orientation hall serving as the Memorial's new formal entry.

• Changing Exhibit Halls

  State-of-the-art galleries to display visiting exhibits as well as rotating exhibitions of the Museum's millions of historical artifacts.

• Story Wall

  A permanent exterior mounted art installation conveying the MacArthur story chronologically and geographically across nine individual etched copper panels.

• Dedicate-A-Seat

  Sponsor a named seat in the new multi-media theatre.
